It was really hard. There was disgusting living conditions, and it challenged adults and children alike. Today's technology has improved ships living conditions, and so has our improvement in basically everything else.
on a warship- life on a warship was hard, especially in the British royal navy. food was heavily salted meat, stale bread, and sometimes some rotted fruit.medical treatment was a joke, and the people were regarded as salves. stories from early American sailors tell how they would rather drown than be impresses on to a British frigate or ship of a line. American sailors had it easier , because the ships were better quality, the food was better, and they were actually regarded as people. people who manned the cannons had to constintaily maintain there cannon 24 hours a day. these people sometimes slept with or near there cannon.
on a cargo ship- cargo ships was easier to man. in the Royal navy, crews could be forced to go on a warship in the absence of crew. food wasn't any different. due to the fact that cargo ships weren't warships, sometimes in times of war, they would be escorted by a warship.
people during this time could work on farms or on flatboats.
