In the early 1800s, the East and West were linked by canals. I'm not sure about the links that exist today.

In the 1800s, the land was cheaper in the west. The reason it was cheaper was because it was undeveloped, and hard to reach. Moving to the west was an adventure and a chance to make a new life.
