The origins of the stethoscope date back to 1816 in France. French doctor Rene Laennic invented the first device for listening to a subject's chest. His first stethoscope was little more than a tube created out of rolled paper. The first stethoscope was made by Rene’ Laennec in 1816. It was different to todays models as it was monoaural or one earpiece. His discover was actually made of stacked paper rolled into a cylinder shape, but he soon began to manufacture them made from wood. Binaural stethoscopes first appeared in the 1850's or 1860's and eventually developed into what we see today.
