America was very traditional back then, and the idea of a married woman working was unheard of. Martha Washington's job was to be the First Lady (even though that term was not in common use back then). She was hostess when the president entertained distinguished visitors, and she was also a role model for how a wife (especially the wife of a great leader) should act. She was extremely popular, and women admired her for her elegance; she was also perceived as a compassionate person and a woman who was deeply patriotic.
