Outline of the Story: * There was once a beautiful nymph called Echo * Echo was very fond of talking and always had to have the last word. * Hera was looking for her cheating husband * Echo stalled her to save the nymphs of which whom he was cheating with * So Hera cursed Echo-"You shall forfeit the use of that tongue with which you have cheated me, except for that one purpose you are so fond of - reply. You shall still have the last word, but no power to speak first." * Basically Echo could only repeat the last word someone else says. * Echo saw a beautiful youth called Narcissus * She was hiding- ashamed that she could not talk * He said 'who's there?' Echo replied the same question * So Narcissus said ' Let us join one another' * So Echo threw her arms around his neck. * He rejected her. * So she cursed him so that the next time he saw his own reflection, he would fall in love with it like she had done. * When he next was by a pond, he fell in love with the face he saw * He stayed there- staring at the water- and died * A beautiful flower - a narcissus- exists today, and is always found staring at it's reflection in water. * She went to go and hide in the woods, due to her shame and humiliation. She lived in caves until her flesh shrank away, and her bones became rocks. * Only her voice was left. * She still replies to anyone who calls her, and keeps up her habit of having the last word.NARCISSUS WAS A MORTAL MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIMSELF ECHO WAS A WOODLAND NYMPH WHO BECAME THE ECHO TODAY.

Narcissus and Echo were two of a Roman mythology. A nymph named Echo fell in love with the mortal man Narcissus. But this young man was so shallow. He not only spurned every woman in his town he also rudely told Echo to leave him be while he was hunting a stag in the forest. Echo was heartbroken. She continued to call after him 'until nothing but her voice remained' - meaning she died. Now the goddess of vengeance saw this and cursed him. Narcissus in his whole life never saw his reflection. So when he came upon a pond and saw his reflection he instantly fell in love ... With himself. When he found out the image in the pond was himself and he couldn't act on this love, he began to beat his body until life began to drain out of it. The body-less voice of Echo haunted him and he finally felt sorrow and guilt. His body died, turning into a the flower 'Narcissus' in the place where he died, beside the pond, so he would forever look at himself to forever remind him of the price of his vanity.

Narcissus loved his own looks and watched his reflection in a pool until he died of starvation. Echo was in love with narcissus, but could only repeat the last syllables of what someone had said, so she could not talk to Narcissus, but pined away till only her voice was left.
Echo was an Oread who Zeus would use to distract Hera when he wanted to play with the other nymphs. Hera eventually caught on and punished Echo by taking away her ability to speak for herself. All she could do is foolishly mimic the words of others.

Narcissus was the son of another nymph names Liriope. She was so concerned about the welfare of her son that she consulted an oracle who prophesied that Narcissus would live to a ripe old age so long as he never knew himself.

Echo, upon seeing the handsome lad, fell instantly in love, and she followed him always, calling out to him with his own words. When she finally revealed herself, he spurned her advances, causing her to become a recluse, shunning all suitors until she pined away to nothing at all, her voice the only remaining reminder she existed at all.

As for Narcissus, he was so vain, eventually his vanity caught the attention of Nemesis, who drew him to find his own reflection in a still pool. Once he met his own gaze, he refused to leave the spot, fulfilling the prophecy that he would die young should he ever know himself. The gods, taking pity, turned the dead youth into a lily (we call them daffodils, but they are actually called Narcissus Lilies), its head ever dropping toward the pool to gaze at itself in the water.

Echo is a nymph, not a goddess. She was cursed for talking too much and created the echo, but isn't the goddess of anything.
