Neil Armstrong, was a combat fighter pilot, test pilot, astronaut, university professor and member of two Presidential Commissions on Space Flight Accidents. As an astronaut he was Command Pilot of Gemini 8 and Commander of Apollo 11.

As Commander of Apollo 11, at 2:56 UTC on July 21, 1969, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. Armstrong's statement upon doing so; "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." is one of the best known quotations in the world.

Among other honors, he is a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. The crater in which he landed on the moon is named after him.
