The area was settled by the Spanish and used to be part of Mexico. Most of the Spanish-language names are the names they were given at the time of settlement.
The first known inhabitants of the area known today as Florida were paleo Indians. They likely appeared on the peninsula about 12,000 years ago.
The first European settlement in Georgia was in the area known today as Savannah. It was established in 1566 by the Spanish. Next came an English claim in 166, when Charles II granted land rights to eight lord proprietors. By 1680, Britain had finally dislodged all the Spanish from the area.
The first European settlement in the lands now part of the Canadian Confederation would be the Viking settlement at what is now called L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. The exact name used for the settlement by the Vikings is not known but it is part of the area they called Vinland. The Vikings also appeared to have settled on Baffin Island, an area they called Helluland.

His expeditions laid the groundwork for future Spanish colonization in the region.
