In 1921, the capitol building burned and the "Pasteboard Capitol" was built. The present day capitol building was built in Charleston in the 1920s and very early in the 1930s, where it has remained since.
West Virginia's capital has moved twice. Initially, the capital was located in Wheeling when West Virginia became a state in 1863. It was then moved to Charleston in 1885, where it remains today.
