One reason it was so hard for Spanish explorers to explore California is because there are currents that flow north to south so it was hard for ships to travel up the coast. The land had deserts and mountains which made exploration difficult.
When Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California becamse part of the United States, Spanish was already being spoken there. Explorers from Spain were settling those places while explorers from England were settling in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
