By virtue of the fact that Washington was the first president, he knew that everything he did established "precendent", and he was very cautious about most things, thinking them through first. He rejected several very fanciful titles made up for him, preferring simply "Mr. President", which continues to this day. He had a Horror of anythng being connected with the Presidency that was reminiscent of European royalty, and avoided all such trappings. At the end of his second term, he was asked repeatedly to serve a third, but refused, establishing a precedent that - with the exception of Franklin Roosevelt - continues to this day. And many, many other things, too.
Washington only served two terms and said presidents should not serve more that that. Only Franklin Roosevelt served more than two terms and after him the Constitution was amended to only allow two.
In the two terms during which George Washington served as president, he established a number of significant precedents for the young American nation. His guiding principles for foreign policy were significant on this count; however, what may be most important was his choice to serve no more than two terms as president: this was a powerful precedent that was followed for the next 130 years -- and has since become law.
George Washington set the precedent that presidents should not dress fancily, demean the people, and also that they SHOULD establish a cabinet.

He also established many precedents, such as the two-term limit for presidents and the establishment of a Cabinet system.
