Psyche was supposed to put the beauty of Persephone, the queen of the underworld, in a little box to take to Hades. This task was given to her by Venus (Aphrodite) as a part of her trials. Venus wanted Psyche to retrieve the beauty of Persephone to make herself even more beautiful. However, Psyche was warned not to open the box, but her curiosity got the better of her.

Cupid was supposed to kill Psyche but instead, he fell in love with her. His wife, Psyche, he loved dearly. Then one day, her friends told her to take a look at Cupid and she did, and Cupid punished her and went away. The consequenses were severe and she lost Cupid. Answer 2: Yes, it was sad so far. But that is not the end of the story. Venus was the one who had ordered Cupid to kill Psyche. When he did not, Venus gave Psyche several tasks, supposedly impossible. The last one was to fetch a box from the Underworld. It contained the beauty of Proserpina, Venus told her. Psyche fetched it, but out of curiosity opened it and out came lethal fumes. Psyche fainted but before the fumes had killed her Cupid came to the rescue. He realised that he still loved her and asked Zeus's permission to marry her, even though she was a mortal. And they married. Now she was Cupid's wife, and he never 'ditched her'.
Psyche loves Cupid. Psyche is a human. Cupid is Venus's son. Venus sends Psyche on a mission to deliver a precious box to Hades. Psyche curiosity made her open the box and it put her in an internal sleep. Cupid sees this and rescues her and put the sleep back in the box. Psyche completes the mission and Venus finally accepts her. Jupiter also sees Psyche and he makes her immortal. So then Cupid and Psyche could be together.
She did not. What Psyche opened was a jar of 'Persephone's beauty'. And that was Death!
