On May 24, 1626 Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan for 24 dollars from the indians. He was working for the Dutch West Indies Company. New York was started by the Dutch as New Amsterdam.

Peter Minuit, the Dutch colonial governor of New Amsterdam bought Manhattan Island from the Indians for 60 guilders (approx, $24) in 1626.
It was for 60 Guilders, which was estimated much later than that to be equivalent of about 24 dollars.
It was 7.2 million dollars.
