Numerous things, while it can be argued as either a win for the U.S. or a draw, either way it repelled the Japanese incursion into U.S. territory. In my opinion the biggest boost was that of the morale of the American people, as this victory in there eyes spurred a patriotic surge that could be seen as a contributor to the war effort.
