It was special because it was placed so far away,it was a one of a kind.
It is used sort of as a shadow 'puppet' that projects the shadow image during the solstice into the rings of Stonehenge. However, it has slightly tilted since the construction of Stonehenge! Just a warning, this is off of the top of my head but I'm 99% sure it's accurate.

.Catholic AnswerNormally stone, at least the actual part of the altar that the sacrifice is celebrated on would be stone. There is often an "altar stone" inserted in the top of a wooden altar.
