SpongeBob originally looked more like a real sponge, although he was rather ugly looking. I don't have any photos, however if you look on the SpongeBob the movie DVD in the extras, it will show photos of what he originally looked like.

There are no cats in SpongeBob SquarePants.

However, since snails are the equivalents of cats. SpongeBob has been attacked by Gary in "Have you Seen This Snail?", and he looks no different than before except he has slime on his face.
