Stegosaurus fossils come from the Morrison Formation in the western USA and date to between 155 and 150 million years ago. Some have recently been found in Portugal from the same time period. At that time, the area was a semi-arid subtropical plain with distinct wet and dry seasons. Near rivers, there were forests of conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, ferns, and horsetails. Further from the rivers there were open areas covered in ferns with scattered trees.

Stegosaurus lived in herds of that included juveniles and adults, as evidenced by fossilized footprints. This suggests that mother Stegosaurus did raise their offspring. As large herbivores, they probably spent most of their days and nights eating. They would have used their tail spikes for self defense against predators. Beyond that, we don't know anything of their behavior because they are only known from fossils.

Stegosaurus didn't usually act dangerous. But, if a momma stegosaurus is guarding her pups and a Dilophosaurus comes by, she would be aggressive.
