Although the Ballarat fields were rich, the real goldrush began when gold was discovered at Mt Alexander, 60km northeast of Ballarat, and close to the town of Bendigo. Ballarat, Bendigo and Castlemeaine all form part of the "golden triangle" of Victoria, as their gold strikes were all within a short time of each other.
