The West Indians are decendants of slaves who either escaped or were released from slavery in the colonies of Britain in America and the Carribean. There was no slavery in Britain at that time, but the British did capture west Africans and supply them as slaves to the plantations of these Colonies.
The West played a major role in the crucial issues of this American period. The tariff protected industries from the British surplus goods and helped transfer goods from the west to the east. The West expansion contributed to internal improvements with the construction of roads. It also helped interstate trade, which would be protected by the tariff. With the topic of slave expansion, the West broadened the admission into the new states, whether they were a slave or free state.
Economically, the West Coast had very little in common with the rest of British North America. In mid nineteenth century British Columbia had no canals, and there was no development of manufacturing of the sort found in eastern United States or Canada, before Confederation. To the extent that the West Coast was like the Maritimes, it might have competed with, not joined, the Maritimes; but, in fact, the two coastal economies belonged to geographically separated markets. The gold rush brought a population from the east coast and from other countries making the region to bring more political views more adapted to the American way and consolidated in a nation standart.
