In order to discover who were christians the Japanese government introduced the practice of efumi or picture treading in 1627.

Those suspected of being Christians were ordered to trample on a picture of Christ or his mother.

The government also offered rewards to anyone who informed against a priest, brother, catechist or Christian layman.

In 1634 Japanese were forbidden to go abroad, lest they become christians.

Only an Occasional dutch ship and some Chinese junks were permitted to land in Japan, and the coast was heavily guarded. For more than 200 years, from 1638 to 1854, japan was virtually cut off from the rest of the world.

This is known as the CLOSED DOOR POLICY!
