Germany's first major objective in World War I was to defeat France.

When the war began, Germany was at war with both France and Russia. Since Russia was a very old-fashioned and huge country, German military leaders knew that it would take some time for the full Russian army to get ready to fight. France, on the other hand, was just as modern as Germany, and wasn't as big as Russia. Germany's plan was to defeat France, knock them out of the war, and once that was done, turn to face Russia.

However, France was able to stop Germany's invasion at the first Battle of the Marne- the so-called "Miracle of the Marne". Germany was thus forced to fight a two front war, which it was unable to win, despite Russia's exit from the war over three years later.
