The Khmer Rouge, a name given the Khmer Communist Party by the Prime Minister of Cambodia the Party ousted in a coup of April, 1975, Lon Nol. Lon Nol had, with the aid of an American invasion of Cambodia, become the Prime Minister after routing the forces of the hereditary ruler of Cambodia, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, in 1970. The five years of the Lon Nol regime and the invasion of Cambodia from the air by the United States made the Nol government extremely unpopular and paved the way for the takeover in 1975 by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.
The Khmer Rouge set about almost immediately to evacuate the entire city of Phnom Pehn, the capital, moving almost two million people into the countryside for "reeducation", and then set about the systematic slaughter of essentially the entire population of educated Cambodians. During the period from 1977 through 1981, an estimated number of over 2,000,000 Cambodians were killed, including a great number of children, who were said to have been killed so they could not retaliate for the deaths of their families.
Khmer Rouge began in 1975 and ended in 1979.
