the cheasapeke leopard affair occured June 22, 1807 off port cheasapeke.

The British were a bit put off by this, and in 1807 the British ship HMS Leopard stopped the USS Chesapeake, and demanded that they be allowed to search the ship for deserters. The captain of the US. ship obviously said no, and the British messenger returned to the Leopard.

At this time the gun ports on the Leopard opened up, but because the American ship was so overstuffed and poorly organized when it came to supplies they were ineffective at bringing their guns out. The Leopard fired several shots into the Chesapeake, killing 2, mortally wounding 3, and injuring 16 others. The Chesapeake was only able to fire one shot in return.

The captain of the Chesapeake surrendered the ship when he saw that the fight was lost. The British captain did not take the ship, but only searched it, finding four deserters. the four US. born sailor's were taken prisoners.
