The Long March was a series of marches that were lead by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China as they evaded the Kuomintang army from October of 1934 until October 1935. The Long March began when Mao Zedong took over power of China.
Mao's 'Long March' prevented the destruction of the Chinese Red Army. At the beginning of the Long March, the Red Army was in a precarious position, surrounded and being out fought. When Mao took control of the retreat, he changed the stratagey and tactics of the Red Army, preventing its destruction and achieving a position of safety/strength from which it could resume its battle with Chinese Nationalists.
In addition to saving the Red Army, the Long March was hailed as a great victory for the Communists and is still regarded as an amazing military feat. The 10,000 or so men who survived the march came out a disciplined, trained, and effective fighting force that provided the cadre for the revitalized Red Army which eventually defeated the Japanese and the Chinese Nationalists.
