High desert plateau and mountains. Much of it is a steppe like climate. The elevation ranges from 4000 - 8000 feet with some higher mountains to 10,000. So there is a big range in climate. There is snow in the winter and it is cold at night. Mostly it is low humidity. The total precipitation is low. There are thunderstorms in the summer. Some is very dry desert, much is pinyon pine and juniper steppe and some it high mountains with pine and fir and spruce.

The current Navajo Nation is 23,000 square miles and ranges mostly from 4,500ft to 8000 ft. with some areas as high as 10,000 . Therefore there is a great range in winter climate. It is high desert with snow in the winter but dry enough that often the snow evaporates rather than melts. It is often below freezing at night and in the low 40's and clear in the day. Higher it is colder with more snow, lower less snow and warmer. The original traditional Navajo lands were a somewhat larger and therefore had even more variation but was centered on the same area.
