Although most Republicans - and many conservative Democrats - fought it as a "Communist" idea, the New Deal brought about a great number of important public works such as the Hoover Dam and the advent of electricity in many rural areas. And through those public works, tens of thousands of jobless people could be employed again. That again caused the economy to pick up, although it would take until the advent of WW 2 with its enormous demand for wartime production, before the economy and employment would be fully restored.
