July 26, 1956 to Jan 10, 1957.

Interesting, the above first answer gives the end date as the date of Eden's resignation. I think most would argue it was over when a ceasefire was called by the British, unable to continue without a hefty loan from the IMF (which the Americans would not permit without a ceasefire) on 6th November, 1956.

The Suez Crisis was a conflict over the Suez canal between the Mediterranean and the red sea, this was strategically important to Britain as it connected it to the remains of her empire but also to all European NATO countries as it allowed the Import of oil from the Middle East.

Egypt nationalised the Canal

The IDF attacked Egypt in the Sinai, using paras to seize important objectives then armoured thrusts to link up. Britain and France then seized the canal zone under the pretense of splitting up the warring parties. They would then argue to the UN that Egypt being so war like and unstable could not control such an important area. And hence occupy it.

The military operation was successfully and the canal zone was successfully seized but America threatened to devalue the pound forcing the allied force to withdraw.
