It was in fact a great brick ziggurat, or stepped pyramid, still served by a large priesthood after thousands of years. On the very top of the ziggurat was a small shrine of blue-glazed brick and, inside, a well-covered couch and a golden table where the god Marduk spent every New Year's night in the company of specially selected Babylonian maidens.
