The Tower of London has been used for many things. Aside from being a royal palace, it has been a fortress and a prison. Graffiti left by some of the prisoners can be seen in public areas. Prisoners included Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn and the Kray twins.
While most criminals sentenced to death were hanged outside the Tower, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey were executed within the Tower walls. They are all buried in the Chapel.
Since 1303, the Crown Jewels have been kept at the Tower of London, and can be viewed in the Jewel House.
More unusual uses include housing Henry III's menagerie, after he received a wedding gift of three leopards. The zoo was open to the public, but during the nineteenth century all the animals were moved to London Zoo, which is in Regents Park.
For 500 years the Royal Mint was based at the Tower of London, but in 1809 it moved across the road, to what is now Royal Mint Street, and later to Wales, where it is today.
The Tower has also housed an observatory and a public records office.

∙ 13y agoIts main purpose was as a fortress but it has also been a prison, a menagerie, a royal palace, a torture chamber and a place of execution. It is now a museum, the home of the British Crown Jewels, a major tourist attraction and it still has a small military garrison.
