The U-Boat in the first World War, were German submarines that were used primarily, to sink merchant ships coming from the United States to UK. They also sunk ocean liners, which eventually led to America declaring war against Germany in 1917. The technology was still rather new and not nearly as effective as the German UBoats in World War 2. The Germans used their submarines much more than they ever used their surface fleet during the war.

The German navy was very cautious about confronting the much larger British navy. When they did at the Battle of the Jutland Sea, both sides suffered heavy losses but from that time until the end of the war, the German fleet never again ventured out to fight the allies.

Who was involved in World War 1 at sea?

The war at sea in world war one (as with two in the atlantic) was inherintly limited by the allies primarily Britains decicive advantage, the Germans faught the French and the British with the battle of Jutland being the main engagement. The result of this was the British taking heavier losses than the Germans but the Germans lost their ability to really challenge the British and did not engage in major surface engagments after this. The Germans pioneered submarine warfare during world war one but this was relatively limited and is mainly significant in its influence in the German decision and ability to launch a Uboat campaign in world war 2
