Admiral Graf Spee defeated the British at the Coronel Islands north west of South America.
This was a British armed cruiser force and a naval force from Plymouth was dispatched to deal with the Germans under Sturdee. On Dec 8 the German squadron ran into Sturdee near the Falklands. Spee left hurriedly but Sturdee sank 4 of his 5 ships, the 5th blew herself up when caught by two British cruisers

The war in the air was in its infancy. Powered flight predates WW1 by only 10 years.... There is only one sea battle in WW1 of note: Jutland in 1916. Although far from a victory for the Royal Navy the German High Seas Fleet retired to port never to return to the sea except to Scuttle after the end of the war.
