South Carolina's early hardships included Indian hostilities. The Native American Indians of this region were more hostile to the first settlers than others to the north. There was also strife later on when North and South both wanted to have outposts there during the Civil War.

The Yemassee Indians migrated to escape slavery by the Spanish. The Yamassee that are in South Carolina today are originals and some from North Florida, from the Hitchiti Stock of Yamassee called Miccosuki .These are descendants of Aripuka Hadjo aka Sam Jones, Chief Se`khu Hadjo Gentle is a relative of Sam Jones, while others in Florida (Oklawaha Yamassee) are related to the South Carolina Yamassee as descendants, of Coe Hadjo (Harjo) cousin to Mico Sam Jones.

At the time of first European settlement, there were several tribe of Native American peoples living in the area now making up South Carolina. The Catawba, Cherokee, Creek, Yuchi, Cusabo, Edisto and various Carolina Siouan bands including the Chicora, PeeDee, Waccamaw and Santee were known to be present in South Carolina originally. Subsequently, groups of the Chickasaw and Shawnee tribes moved into the South Carolina territory after European settlement.
