The theory of airships in general was to provide a lifting body that could carry passengers in reasonable comfort and speed cheaply ( compared to winged aircraft. ) The Zeppelins were supremely efficient airships for their day. The US Navy liked this idea in the late 1920's and had 2 airships made as flying aircraft carriers. They were almost as big as the largest Zeppelin, Hindenburg, and could carry, launch and retrieve 5 fighter aircraft each.
