The archdeacon was (and still is) a high-ranking cleric, usually just below the rank of Bishop. He usually has full administrative power over a part of a diocese, or is the administrative head within the whole diocese of a specific branch of the administration. He is often seen as 'the eyes and ears' of the bishop.
Archdeacons can be found mostly in the Anglican Church of England and in the eastern Orthodox Churches. The Roman Catholic church used to have them; but although the rank never was formally abolished it is no longer used there.
