A bard, in history, was a Celtic minstrel. A bard today is a poet. In Wales, UK, there is an annual ceremony (at the National Eisteddfod) where an outstanding poet is crowned as the Supreme Bard for the year.

There are and have been many bards, the most famous being William Shakespeare.

A Stratford church baptismal record, believed to be his, shows that a certain

Gulielmus Filius Johannes Shakespeare

was baptised there. It is written in Latin, and translates directly as "Gulielmus, son of Johannes Shakespeare"

In due course his given name 'Gulielmus' became more familiarly known as Gwilliam, or William.

(And his father's name 'Johanne' was translated, or changed into the English name 'John')

To his friends William Shakespeare was probably called just William. To others, to identify which particular 'William' he was, he was called "William, son of John (Shakespeare)", contracted in due course to 'William Shakespeare'.
