Rommel was the German commander in North Africa, from about 1940 to 1942. His primary opponent in Africa was the British general Alexander Montgomery, although there were a couple of battles against the American general George Patton.

The British Eighth Army and the newly involved Americans where there to protect oil supplies in mid east and the british protectorate of Egypt, The Germans were stopped by Montgomery's forces at the Battle of El Alamein only 150 miles from Cairo. Germany,s first defeat by the allies. The oil fields were saved and Rommels forces were chased out of Africa, opening the way to invade Italy, Churchills plan to strike at Germany 'through its soft undebelly' had come to fruition.
