The longest fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) reported was a 27.3 m (89.5 ft) female caught near the South Shetland Islands in 1925. The longest reliably measured was a 24.5 m (80.5 ft) female caught off South Georgia in 1926. The largest weighed piecemeal was a 22.7 m (74.5 ft) female caught in the Antarctic in 1948 which weighed 69.5 metric tons (not including 6% for loss of fluids).

There are several species and sub species of whale. Some of the most well known are the blue whale, fin whale and the humpback whale. Whilst the fin whale species have largest fin length, most whales tend to a have a dorsal fin of some description.
Either the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) or the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus). The former can reach lengths of 89.5 ft (27.3 m) but only weighs 70 metric tons, while the latter reaches lengths of 65 ft (20 m) and weighs over 100 metric tons.
