Geographic features can both facilitate and hinder cultural diffusion. For example, rivers and trade routes can promote the exchange of goods and ideas between different societies, while mountains and deserts can act as barriers limiting interaction. In some cases, geographic isolation can preserve unique cultural practices, while in others, proximity to other cultures can lead to blending and the creation of new cultural expressions.

The Reason
There is one reason on why diffusion is more quickly in today's world then in the past. It is because having better transportation.
A physical or cultural reason for something can be very different from one another. For example, a physical reason for not engaging in a game of cricket may be that a person is physically unable to play, a cultural reason may be that they don't know the rules, having never learned them as the game isn't culturally prevalent in all areas.

The Middle East and North Africa share many cultural and historical similarities. They were often part of the same major empires and are currently almost all Muslim-majority states. Conversely, the culture and history of North Africa contrasts quite strongly with the culture and history of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Mapungubwe were a kingdom in South Africa from about 900 and 1,300 AD. Climate change brought about an end to the kingdom. The remains of this kingdom are the reason for the world heritage site.

The main reason a diffusion is so slow is because it is a passive process. It relies on the natural movement of molecules to function, and as such can take quite some time to complete.
