Easy A was (very loosely) adapted from the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Even the movie's screenwriter, Bert V. Royal, said that he got ten pages into The Scarlet Letter before realizing that the movie and the book would have few similarities.
The Scarlet Letter is about a woman (Hester Prynne) in colonial America who has an extramarital relationship with a minister. She is tormented by society until her dying day, when she becomes a saint when the community felt they misjudged her. But during her life, she is made to wear a red 'A' on her clothes, for aduIterer.
Olive Penderghast in Easy A, however, never has an extramarital relationship - or even a boyfriend, for that matter. A rumor is spread that she did, and her high school (North Ojai High School) classmates shun and mock her. Instead of wearing an A as a punishment, Olive flaunts it. She reinvents her wardrobe and sews an A onto all of her shirts to play up the saucy image everyone is inventing for her. Once Olive is tired of the act, instead of boring it in silence, as Hester does, Olive takes action and hosts a live webcast to clear her name in front of everyone.
The only main similarities between the two are that the community rejects the two women after hearing what they 'did', and they have a red 'A' on their clothes.
Easy Street - book - was created in 1981.
