Williamsburg The first capitol was Jamestown in 1619-1704. Williamsburg became the capitol in 1705. Finally in 1788 Richmond was declared the capitol and it still is.


1616-1699 - Jamestown

1699-1776 - Williamsburg Williamsburg remained the State Capital until 1780 when Governor Thomas Jefferson moved the government to Richmond which was far less vulnerable to a British Naval Attack.
