Gary Powers died while flying a Los Angeles TV news station's helicopter on August 1, 1977. The stated cause was pilot error, although there is some later information that claims an improper repair on the fuel gauges may have contributed to his failure to know he didn't have adequate fuel. There were 2-4 airports enroute that he could have used to refuel. He ran out a few miles short of his destination airport, and he and his cameraman died following an unsuccessful autorotation into the Sepulveda Basin in the San Fernando Valley. There is some evidence he changed his landing site at a late stage due to children in his intended let-down spot, and he was unable to make the transition successfully.
Francis Gary Powers was a U-2 pilot who was shot down over Russia by a Russian missile. He was in a U-2 spy plane, NOT a helicopter.
He was shot down while flying a high altitude reconnaissance plane over the Soviet Union. He was held in prison for about 2 years, and returned to the US in an exchange of prisoners. He died in a helicopter crash in 1977.
