August 1945 A bit more information. Aug 6 for Hiroshima and Aug 9 for Nagasaki.
To show the power of the United States and cause fear to make japan surrender.
When the atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima, some people were vaporized, some were blown to bits, some were killed by the explosion, some received heat burns that would kill them in a few days, some were killed or injured by flying by flying debris, some received a dosage of radiation which would cause leukemia at a later date, and some survived.
The cold war came after WW 2 and the atomic bombings were the cause the war ended.
The crew for the first Atomic bombing of Hiroshima was initially pro-bomb, as were the US soldiers everywhere. Men on the ground put taunting messages on the bomb (as if anyone would ever see them!), and the bomb was nicknamed "Little Boy". But in about 43 seconds after releasing the bomb, they saw the mushroom cloud; they soon felt the shockwaves even though they were flying away by then. US soon received reports of the human toll and devastation. Bombing Nagasaki later was the final attempt to cause Japan to submit and surrender. That crew knew what the bomb could do; I doubt any of them enjoyed their task.
Led the United States to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945
The fallout creates some problems for any creature living in the area. For example a priest who went on to rebuilt church, developed symptoms of nuclear sickness like his hair fell and eruptions in his skin. That happened to the people who were there in the first week of the blast.
On August 6 1945, Kokura was cloudy so Hiroshima was next.
Upon impact, 70,000 people were killed instantly and another 70,000 injured. At that time, Hiroshima had a population of around 255,000. It's believed that there were around 140,000 deaths in total. Some died during the actual bombing and some died later from radiation poisoning, cancer, or leukemia.
