the New World
The common name of Alces alces is moose (in North America) or European elk (in Europe and Asia).
European explorers were searching for new trade routes to Asia, specifically for valuable spices and other goods. They were also looking for new lands to claim in the name of their monarchs and to spread Christianity.
The name "America" is derived from the Latin version of the name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. His voyages to the New World in the late 15th and early 16th centuries led to the recognition that the lands discovered by Europeans were part of a separate continent, distinct from Asia. Although the name does not directly reference Native Americans, it reflects the European perspective on the new lands they encountered.
