How long did Armed Forces Leave Bonds earn interest?

Five years. Armed Forces Leave Bonds matured five years after the date of issue and ceased earning interest at that time. While they initially had to be held to maturity, the law was changed in 1947 to allow them to be cashed prior to maturity. There is a collector market for these items. There may be greater collector value than redemption value.

What makes up the US armed forces?

In general military forces are made up of the citizens of a nation who either volunteer to serve in their forces or are conscripted to serve in the forces. In the US the forces are made up of the enlisted and the commissioned officers and the Secretary of the Armed Forces and the Chief (the President of the US). In the United Kingdom the Royal Forces belong to the Queen of the kingdom and are responsible to her or the King when there is one. The forces consist of enlisted people and the officers and the Admiralty. In Israel the forces are conscripted and there are those who enlist. They too have enlisted, conscripted and commissioned officers. During World War 2 there were also drafted/conscripted men in the forces because they needed millions of men for all the forces. After the Viet Nam War the US chose to have only enlisted personnel and commissioned officers but they reserved the right to enact the draft again if it was necessary. The men have to register for the draft even though they may not ever be drafted. Military forces consist of Naval forces, Aviation forces such as the US Air Force or the Royal Air Force, Army forces, Marine forces, recon forces (special forces), Coast Guard forces, and some countries have special intelligence forces. All these military type forces have their own structures and units. Some countries only have one military because they are too small a country or too poor.

Who gave the orders for the US to go to DEFCON 2?

DEFCON, or defense readiness condition, is not a national status for the United States. Different branches of the military can be under different DEFCON levels. DEFCON levels are controlled by the President and the Secretary of Defense when ordering to raise or lower the level across all US Armed Forces; however, branch leaders and administration can also individually raise or lower DEFCON levels of their respective branches. DEFCON 2 is the second-highest level of alert readiness for the United States Armed Forces, and conjointly describes an emergency defense situation in which nuclear war is near. The only time DEFCON 2 was ever raised was during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The Strategic Air Command (SAC) was ordered to DEFCON 2 alertness by their command headquarters on 26 October 1962, while the rest of the armed forces stayed at DEFCON 3.

Why did some Americans want to take control of islands in the pacific?

America having control or granted permission to set up bases for their armed forces, meant that they where more central in the Pacific Ocean, and nearer to Asia. This would shorten their response time to meet any hostile assault from an Asian country, and keep their supply lines to their front line forces as short as possible.
