===========================

The Battle of the Somme (French: Bataille de la Somme), also known as the Somme Offensive, took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916. The Sommen Offensive was one of the largest battles of the First World War and is estimated that by the end there were more than 1.5 million casualties on both sides. On the first day of the offensive, British Expeditionary Force alone suffered over 57,000 casualties (19,240 dead, 35,493 wounded, 2,152 missing and 585 prisoners), or 20% of its strength. It was the single bloodiest day in the history of the British Army
