The wergild in Germanic law served as a means of compensation or restitution for crimes such as homicide. It was a way to restore peace between families and prevent blood feuds. The ordeal was a method of trial by which the accused underwent a physical test or ritual, believed to be guided by divine intervention to determine guilt or innocence.
wergild
The compensation to be paid for taking the life of a man.
Wergild, or "man price," was a legal compensation system in early Germanic societies, where a monetary value was assigned to individuals based on their social status and role within the community. When a person was killed, the victim's family could demand wergild from the offender or their family as restitution, preventing blood feuds and promoting social order. The amount was typically negotiated between the involved parties, often with the assistance of local leaders or elders, and the settlement aimed to restore balance and maintain peace within the community. Failure to pay wergild could lead to further conflict or retaliation.
Trial by jury involves a group of impartial individuals who decide the verdict based on evidence presented in court, while trial by ordeal relies on a physical test or ritual to determine guilt or innocence, often involving supernatural elements. Trial by jury is based on reasoned analysis and legal principles, while trial by ordeal is based on superstition and a belief in divine intervention.

That was quite an ordeal!
A trial by ordeal was a primitive method of determining a person's guilt or innocence by subjecting the accused person to dangerous or painful tests believed to be under divine control; escape was usually taken as a sign of innocence. in England a woman accused of being a witch was tide to a chair which hung over a pond. She was lowered into the pond for a period of time. If she survived the ordeal she was let go. If she drowned it proved her to be a witch and was buried outside of church grounds. Trial by combat was between an opposing enemy. Boxing could be classed as a combat. Anything where fighting took place between opposite forces or individuals.
