Russia fought with the Allies during World War I, but was unable to counter the forces of Germany. The country suffered many casualties and lost multiple territories to Germany. The loss is what allowed the Communist Party to take control of the country. Russia deciding to participate in the War did little more than temporarily slow down Germany.

gfdfgdfgdf First answer above is a clown.. With that said, this is a major edit. The event that helped Germany late in WW1 was the withdrawal of Russia from the war. This was part of the deal with Germany and Lenin. They agreed to get him back to Russia from his exile if he stopped the Russian participation in the War.
Russia's participation in WW1 is often flossed over by historians in general because they quit the war right in the middle of it (due to their Bolshevik Revolution); afterwards in which faster paced actions buried the Russian's participation into obscurity. Italy experienced the same thing; only a brief mentioning in the history books, because they quit WW2 right in the middle of it, in 1943.
