Traditionally kohl was used for eye make-up.
The Egyptians used a black stone similar to iron ore to make black eye makeup. This stone contained a great amount of lead. The stone was crushed and mixed with water.
Tye did not use an element but a compound made from an element - namely Antimony(III) sulfide, Sb2S3.
The Ancient Egyptians were very particular about their appearances, as they considered beauty to be a sign of holiness. Unsurprisingly, then, they developed cosmetics. They created black eye make-up using a black galena called kohl.
That eye make-up is kohl, an ancient cosmetic, traditionally made by grinding galena (lead sulfide) and other ingredients.
Mercury, Balanos, Malachite, Sulfide of lead, among others.
