Benjamin Franklin (1706- 1790 ) made discoveries relating to the theory of electricity and made practical inventions that illustrated scientific principles. His famous and very dangerous experiment of flying a kite in a thunder storm showed that lightning was a form of electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'harmonica'. He was active in supporting the scientific community of his day .
