A fall line has to do with the boundary between uplands and lower plains; this would result in rapids or a waterfall. The advance of colonial immigrants deeper inland was, obviously, much more problematic due to the impassable rivers. People like Lewis and Clark had to bi-pass Appalachian fall lines to get a viable river.
