Field Punishment No. 1 was used by the British Army, and sometimes also by the Australian forces, during WWI to punish troops for offences such as disobedience, failed inspections, sleeping at posts and getting drunk. Soldiers were tied full-length to a post or gun wheel, often for two hours a day (one in the morning, one in the evening) for up to 28 days. The earlier punishments of flogging had been abolished in 1881. This was a humilating form of punishment for the soldiers and the limits of it were often stretched, so that they could be placed within enemy range or the rope was too tight and restricted breathing or blood circulation.
